On Thursday we had our first scan. This scan was done at LBH before having my appointment with the Early Pregnancy Assessment Service. The lady who did the scan was lovely, although she seemed to lack a bit of confidence and maybe even experience.
She firstly looked through the tummy, doing a normal scan. She found Snowflakes sac, but said it was maybe a little too small. I was worried that there wasn't anything in there at all! But she said there was something small in there.
The man thought he could see a flicker of a heartbeat there but she couldn't confirm that. After checking out a few other things we decided it was time to try the internal scan (or dildo cam as I like to call it hehe).
The man had to leave before we did this as he break was over. So it was just me and our ultrasound tech. She had a look and we could see a little blob in there, right where it should be. She measured Snowflake and said it was measuring 6wks 1 day (we had predicted anywhere between 6wks and 6wks 4 days). She then measured again and got 6wks 2 days. So Snowflake is pretty much measuring right where it should be. So that is good. She found something that *might* be a heart beat. It was 115bpm - but she was worried that it was the rate that my heart rate was likely to be. I have since looked up heart rates and found this:
Average resting heart rate
- Adult Males about 72
- Adult Females 76 to 80
- Newborns up to 140
- Children about 90
- Elderly 50 to 65
She then put the colour on the screen which shows where blood flow is and we got some beautiful colour up there where the heart should be - but she was still very confused and wouldn't commit to that being bubs heart beat.
We are, as always, hopeful. :)
We are going in to have another scan on Tuesday morning at a private ultrasound company. There are two reasons for this.. firstly, I would like to confirm what we think we saw. And secondly, we have an appointment with the ob on Wednesday and I need scans to take to the appointment and it would likely be difficult to get the scans from the hospital.. and to be honest, Im not sure it would be worth the films it was printed on.
So our first scan experience this pregnancy wasn't horrible, but it didn't give us everything we needed either. And I look forward to updating on Tuesday.. and if all goes well, I might even get a pic to share too :)
